On Ubuntu 12.10 rear dump fails with the message:

ERROR: Cannot find required programs: mingetty

but ubuntu is using getty instead of mingetty? Is this really necessary?

just run apt-get -f install after running dpkg -i rear*.deb to fix the missing dependencies. I'll add it to the documentation.
