#371 Issue closed: booting from ISO fails

Labels: support / question

omeier opened issue at 2014-02-25 16:25:

I installed and configured rear (creating ISO to NFS share, backup with EMC Networker) on a physical server (SLES11SP3 on HP ProLiant DL360 G5).
rear -v mkrescue worked without probems. Backup is successfully done with EMC Networker. But booting from ISO fails (ISO is provided by virtual CD drive with ilo2 / BMC), see attached image.

rear

backup7:/etc/rear # rear -v mkbackup

Two questions:

  1. are you using secure boot?
  2. check your initrd image with chroot command - it might be incomplete somehow

omeier commented at 2014-02-26 11:45:

hello, thank you for your response!

  1. no, it's BIOS - not UEFI

  2. I'm not an expert in chroot, so this is what I tried yet:

Ok run rear -vd mkrescue and go into the /tmp/rear.XgaNJuQIfMvyRJa/tmp/ directory (name will be different of course), create a directory mkdir initrd-root and go to that directory. Run the comand: gunzip -c ../initrd.cgz | cpio -i
Then, execute chroot .
This should bring you into the chroot environment of the initial ramdisk (you tried the second phase root file system which is loaded afterwards). Do you get errors here?

omeier commented at 2014-02-27 16:46:

Hello again,
I did as suggested. When switching to chroot BASH starts without errors.

It is not the purpose that you copy the default.conf to the site.conf file. Only put in the site.conf (or local.conf) what you want to define (or change from the default values). This is very confusing for debugging reasons.

Could you remove the current site.conf file and recreate it with the values:

BACKUP=NSR
OUTPUT=ISO
BACKUP_URL=nfs://dd990.fqdn/data/col1/rear/backup
OUTPUT_URL=nfs://dd990.fqdn/data/col1/rear/output
NSRSERVER=backupserver.fqdn

And retry it once again.
