- Description of the issue (ideally so that others can reproduce it):
After "rear -D mkbackup" succeeded without any noticeable (error)
message
booting the USB disk on the same computer shows the syslinux boot
menue
but the usual topmost entries to boot the ReaR recovery system are
missing.
I.e. it seems one gets in the syslinux boot menue only
the menue label
entries in boot/syslinux/extlinux.conf on the USB disk
include /rear/syslinux.cfg
menu label Other actions
menu label ^Help for Relax-and-Recover
menu label Boot ^First local disk (hd0)
menu label Boot ^Second local disk (hd1)
menu label Boot ^BIOS disk (0x81)
menu label Boot ^Next device
menu label Hardware ^Detection tool
menu label ^Reboot system
menu label ^Power off system
but neither the include /rear/syslinux.cfg
menue labels
menu label Recovery images
menu label linux-h9wr
include /rear/linux-h9wr/20201130.1025/syslinux.cfg
menu label ^Back
nor the include /rear/linux-h9wr/20201130.1025/syslinux.cfg
menue
labels
menu label 2020-11-30 10:25 backup
menu label 2020-11-30 10:25 backup - AUTOMATIC RECOVER
so one cannot boot the ReaR recovery system.
The bad UX (user experience) is that during "rear -D mkbackup" nothing
idicates
there could be later problems to boot the ReaR recovery system.
Because ReaR should "Try hard to care about possible errors"
cf.
https://github.com/rear/rear/wiki/Coding-Style
I consider that there is no message during "rear -D mkbackup" about
possible problems later to boot the ReaR recovery system
as a "bug" in ReaR (the bug is the missing information to the user
not the fact that there are certain limits what can be booted under
what circumstances with a particular firmware on a particular computer).
In contrast to
https://github.com/rear/rear/pull/2525
(...files greater or equal ISO_FILE_SIZE_LIMIT ... in the ISO)
where the backup.tar.gz gets corrupted in the ISO so the backup is
lost
this issue here is less severe because the backup.tar.gz file
rear/linux-h9wr/20201130.1025/backup.tar.gz
on the USB disk is completely readable so the backup is not lost here.
- Workaround, if any:
I had experienced such kind of issues
(unable to boot the recovery system with OUTPUT=USB plus
BACKUP_URL=usb:///)
before in January 2020 when I prepared for my FOSDEM "rear recover"
presentation.
At that time it had helped to make the ReaR data partition on the USB
disk much smaller
(I used only a few GiB - just enough for my small test system's
backup).
At that time I had no time to analyze the actual root cause but a
colleague had helped me
who told me about certain size limits so that syslinux can boot a
system.
I think I vaguely remember those size limits are actually limits in the
BIOS
because syslinux needs BIOS functionality to access data on the disk
but I am no expert in this area so I could be plain wrong.
If the root cause are limits in the BIOS
https://tldp.org/HOWTO/Large-Disk-HOWTO-4.html
lists various such possible limits.
Additionally I found
https://wiki.syslinux.org/wiki/index.php?title=Hardware_Compatibility#USB_related_problems
I fear the only actual solution is to have all what syslinux needs
to boot the ReaR recovery system in a separated sufficiently small
boot partition and the backup in a big separated backup partition.
But this would require major rework of the extlinux/syslinux setup code
in ReaR.
Perhaps OUTPUT=RAWDISK works better - I will try that out.
I had never used OUTPUT=RAWDISK before so currently I cannot tell
if it is possible to get the backup.tar.gz included in the RAWDISK
image
so that one could get an "all-in-one" BIOS bootable RAWDISK image
that contains the ReaR recovery system plus the backup.tar.gz - cf.

@rear/contributors and all who could help here:
I would very much appreciate any helpful information
about the actual limits on nowadays normal hardware
when booting a system on USB disk with syslinux and BIOS
or more usual nowadays with syslinux and UEFI in legacy BIOS mode.
jsmeix commented at 2020-12-07 15:21:¶
To find out where the disk access limit is
of the UEFI in legacy BIOS mode of my particular laptop
I did # usr/sbin/rear format /dev/sdb
with `USB_DEVICE_FILESYSTEM_PERCENTAGE=25
which results
# parted -s /dev/sdb unit GiB print
Model: TOSHIBA External USB 3.0 (scsi)
Disk /dev/sdb: 466GiB
Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B
Partition Table: msdos
Disk Flags:
Number Start End Size Type File system Flags
1 0.01GiB 116GiB 116GiB primary ext3 boot, type=83
so the ReaR data partition is within the first 128GiB on the USB disk
so all blocks in the ReaR data partition are below the 128GiB limit in
https://wiki.syslinux.org/wiki/index.php?title=Hardware_Compatibility#USB_related_problems
1.)
I did a first # usr/sbin/rear -D mkbackup
with
OUTPUT=USB
BACKUP=NETFS
BACKUP_URL=usb:///dev/disk/by-label/REAR-000
USB_SUFFIX="ReaRbackup"
which results a USB disk where the syslinux boot menue
shows the following menu labels (linux-h9wr
is the hostname
and the sub-menue labels are shown indented here):

Boot First local disk (hd0)
Boot Second local disk (hd1)
Boot BIOS disk (0x81)
Boot Next device
Hardware Detection tool
Reboot system
Power off system
and choosing linux-h9wr
-> ReaRbackup backup
boots the ReaR recovery system.
2.)
I did a second # usr/sbin/rear -D mkbackup
with
OUTPUT=USB
BACKUP=NETFS
BACKUP_URL=usb:///dev/disk/by-label/REAR-000
USB_SUFFIX="ReaRbackup2"
which results a USB disk where the syslinux boot menue
shows the following menu labels (linux-h9wr
is the hostname
and the sub-menue labels are shown indented here):
Recovery images
linux-h9wr
ReaRbackup backup

and choosing linux-h9wr
-> ReaRbackup2 backup
boots the second ReaR recovery system.

It contains /mnt/rear/linux-h9wr/ReaRbackup4/
because accidentally
I had re-done the one with USB_SUFFIX="ReaRbackup4"
in
etc/rear/local.conf
again on Dec 9. so the existing one that I had done on Dec. 8. was
overwritten
(i.e. I had forgotten to adapt USB_SUFFIX="ReaRbackup..."
before).
